HEALTH BENEFITS OF UGU (PUMPKIN) LEAVES


  
The fluted pumpkin botanically known as Telfaira occidentalis has one advantage in that it can be enjoy throughout the year unlike some other vegetables. However, you see the leaves flood the market more during rainy season. It is a tropical vine plant native to West Africa but occurs mostly in its cultivated form.

Ugu (pumpkin) is a highly medicinal vegetable, Ugu (pumpkin leaf) juice is used for curing various illnesses, especially Malaria.
Only what you have to do is to get Ugu leaves, wash and extract the juice by straining the leaves. Steam it for a short while before drinking or you can mix with malt, pineapple, orange, grape to improve the flavor. This is a very fast herbal way to regain your strength and become normal again.

1 cup water
A handful Ugu (Pumpkin) leaves
Malt, pineapple, orange, grape juice (optional)

Pumpkin leaf (Telfairia occidentalis ) is known by different names across Africa. In Nigeria it is known as Ugu, In Ghana it is known as Krobonko,


while people from Sierra Leone call it Gonugbe. Fluted pumpkin leaves are rich in potassium, calcium, iron and some Folic acid. it also contains a healthy amount of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Thiamin, Niacin, vitamin B6, Folate, Iron, magnesium and phosphorus, and a very good source of dietary fibre, riboflavin, Copper and Manganese
UGWU HAS A HIGH FIBER CONTENT: if you’re constipating, consuming enough Ugu (pumpkin) vegetable it will be helpful since it contain high fibre. It will help to easier to download feaces.
- The anti-oxidants, such as alpha-carotene and Beta–carotene contained in it helps to slow down ageing process and also helps to eliminate free radicals which are responsible for cancerous growths.
